I am so proud of my students who are willing to take a challenging course like Chemistry. Chemistry is an important course which gives students a fundamental background of the way things interact on a molecular level. This course requires a high level of mathematical skills. It is the first step for many students who will pursue a higher education in medicine, technology, pharmacy, forensics, engineering, and many others.
These students are stretching their minds to new levels while gaining confidence in their own abilities.
I currently teach 5 classes of Chemistry to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Chemistry is a tough subject to master, and I would like to give my students every opportunity achieve success. Having consistent access to a calculator will help each student succeed no matter their circumstances outside my classroom.
My Project
Just like a chemical reaction, there are certain items needed in order for Chemistry students to produce great results. Access to a calculator that can do advanced mathematical functions might be the most important item needed for this reaction to be successful. Many students come to class without a scientific calculator and must borrow one. This puts them at a disadvantage because they are not familiar with each calculator’s keyboard and order of functions. Students would be more successful if they had consistent access to the same calculator.
Students need to be able to trust the calculator they use so they can focus on thinking through the problem, not trying to find function buttons.
My students and I are asking for a class set of scientific calculators so they can be guaranteed access to a calculator in class. This should give them a level of comfort and familiarity that will help them succeed in class.
