Chemically Reactive Exploration

Help me give my students opportunities to observe chemical changes taking place with these kits, as well as learn about the some of the scientists working around the world as chemists.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I teach at a Title I school in Florida where 54 percent of our students are minorities and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even though our students are considered to be poverty stricken, that does not hold our students back.

Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.

They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day. They love coming to school and stepping into the world of learning where they get to "be all they can be" and strengthen their love of learning through literacy, math, science technology, and much, much more.

My Project

The 8th grade students are assessed to classify and compare substance based on physical properties that can be demonstrated or measured. These physical properties can take the form of: density, thermal/electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetic properties, and melting and boiling points. They need to also understand that these properties are independent of the amount of sample. Additionally they need to be able to distinguish between mixtures (including solutions) and pure substances. They must also explore concepts of the Law of Conservation of Mass and conclude that mass is conserved. This means that the students need materials to conduct experimentation.

The best way for students to retain science topics is through practical exploration.

These kits will allow the students the opportunity to explore, first hand and view close up the changes taking place in the reactions. Being able to do this will not only help them to retain the information, but give them a hunger to go on to high school wondering what else they will observe and do in science. Without the materials and the practical exploration, the learning that the students undertake will only be superficial at best.
