Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach 8th grade science at Northern Granville Middle School in Oxford, NC. The school serves the northern part of Granville County. This section of the county has many low-income families. It is very important that the students be able to participate in "hands-on" science activities in order for them to receive the most benefit from the science class. At the present time, I do not have any safety glasses in my classroom. If the students participate in lab activities, I must either borrow safety glasses from other teachers or I must alter the lab so that there is no danger to the students and their eyes. This greatly reduces the effectiveness of the labs. It is very difficult to coordinate lab activities to relate to the curriculum and at the same time be able to obtain the safety glasses when the other teachers are not using what they have. With the safety glasses, the students will be able to participate in more lab activities that will provide them with a more meaningful educational experience. A set of 35 safety glasses would provide enough for use in each of my classes.
