Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an elementary school where every child matters. School is often students' "safe place" where they know they will be fed and loved by all the teachers around them. Every day the teachers are here for the students because sometimes we are the only constant thing in their lives.
At our school, we want all students to succeed no matter what obstacles they have in their way.
Many of our students struggle with broken homes struggling lives. When education isn't the number one priority in the household, we as teachers have to teach students to be self-motivated and develop a love of learning or determination in everything that they do.
My Project
Cheerleading involves more than just cheering the home team to a big win or performing during halftime or at competitions. It provides many physical, mental and emotional benefits for all young girls. Cheerleading teaches important lessons such as preparation, dedication and working together as a team.
Cheerleading is a great way of connecting a group of young athletes together and it also promotes team building in a positive way.
Being part of a cheerleading squad will give you team building skills and you will be able to carry these skills with you throughout your working life. When the squad is together, matching in unity, moving together, there is a sense of teamwork that you don't find many other places.
Our cheerleading team is fortunate enough to be a sport that lasts the entire school year. Many of the girls practice weekly to support football and basketball. They compete in competitions, pep rally and perform at halftime. They are the once working year round supporting our school and athletes.
The area the cheer team struggles with is uniforms. Many of our students don't have the means to purchase school supplies and cheer uniforms. Cheer uniforms can range anywhere from $300 to thousands of dollars. As you know, uniforms have to fit individually to each squad member and have to be purchased yearly. With the donation of these shorts and tank tops, our cheer team will be able to match when they attend events. They will all be in unison and look the same. Girls won't have to worry about funding for part of their uniform.
