Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a second grade teacher at Benjamin E. Mays Academy on the south-side of Chicago. Mays is a Title I school with more than 90% of the students receiving free lunch. This year for the first time another teacher and I have started a Chess club for grades 1-6. We hope that this club will not only be a fun and safe place to be after school, but also teach our students valuable skills. We hope that by learning the game of Chess our students will increase their critical thinking and problem solving abilities. We currently have 2 Chess sets that 25 students share. In order to really teach each student the rules and moves of the game we would like 12 Chess sets. We know that by teaching our students Chess, they will become confident in the classroom as well as in life.
