Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Low income and low-motivated are how the majority of our students come to us in the 6th grade. My middle school is in the middle of rural Porterville, CA. Another teacher and I would love to partner together with our community to teach these students the art of Chess. Any and all donations would be used strictly for the purchase of chess boards and pieces. Students would be invited to come, learn about each piece as a part of the whole game of Chess, including the key role each piece plays and how the game would not be complete without them. This will tie in, also, to how important each student is as a whole and how our school, class, and community would no be the same without them. Chess is a wonderful door to freeing students' minds to problem solving, working with others, and finding creative ways to look at fixing things. Won't you partner with us?
My Project
These Chess kits will enable us to invite students into our classroom three times a week and teach them the mathematics and strategies behind Chess! We will encourage problem solving skills and backwards mapping in order for students to think ahead and on their feet. The problem solving strategies students gain from Chess directly correlates to how they relate to problems at home, school, and their community around them. Studies have shown that students who engage in Chess are more likely to deal with conflicts in a peaceful and thoughtful manner, working with others to find a solution (in a quick and non-violent way). Students will work together and eventually teach each other what they have learned. The Chess sets are a key component in teaching Chess because we can talk about the pieces, but the world opens up when they begin to make their own synapses fire!
