Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to my classroom! We are composed of 25 energetic 5th graders in Allentown. Our school is 95% in poverty, with all students in my class qualifying for free and reduced lunches and breakfasts. Currently 6 students have individual education plans and 4 students speak with English as their second language. To prepare for middle school, high school and beyond we are working on problem solving skills and career readiness skills. My students love to get involved in after-school activities like basketball, dance, and tutoring, and would love a new opportunity to learn chess as well!
My Project
Help me teach my students skills for the future! Our school currently is expanding after-school opportunities for students.
Beginning a chess club helps teaching problem solving, cooperation, winning and losing, sportsmanship, building strategies, planning ahead and assigning worth.
These are all skills needed from all students who will try to further their education after high school but especially students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
I plan to begin a chess club with up to 30 students to learn the strategies of chess. As we progress through learning the game, we will then plan an end of the year tournament.
