This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the days long before video games, when your play involved classic board games that will be remembered for years to come? I want to give students that same experience in my classroom!
My students are primarily low-income students.
They are energetic, inquisitive, and love friendly competition. When faced with critical thinking challenges, they rise to the occasion. Many other schools in our district have chess clubs and/or after-school chess activities. I would like to see our students have access to such an opportunity.
My Project
I am requesting chess boards with pieces, along with several instructional chess books and chess literature books. A few of my students already know how to play chess, and love it. Many students are excited about learning, but unfortunately we don't have the resources to teach them. They are looking forward to learning more about the game, as well as teaching their peers how to play. Chess is a wonderful activity that I believe will create an atmosphere conducive to team-building, community, and critical thinking practice.
I believe this opportunity will be a great asset to the wonderful students at my school.
Playing chess is an activity that is safe, fun, challenging, affordable, and educational!! Any activity with these benefits should be considered in every school, especially in those with students who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to such an enriching, classic game.
