My Students
My students are from a low-income, rural community in Northern Maine. Our small school is where students not only learn coursework, but also important skills for the real world. The students spend a portion of their day in my social studies classroom taking courses in world history, US history, civics, personal finance, and college and career planning. My students love to be active learners who think, collaborate, analyze, and make connections from the past to current events. I love that they are investing in their futures and challenge themselves in the classroom.
My Project
My students need play money and checks to help them gain a greater understanding of banking, spending, budgeting, and money. I want to ensure that when our students leave high school they have a better understanding of finance and how to manage their money successfully. This includes being able to maintain a checkbook and knowing how to write checks.
The materials will allow my students to learn about finance and the challenges that come up in life.
The money will be used as a game to increase learning and to challenge students to count money back correctly. These opportunities will allow students to play out financial literacy lessons in a safe classroom environment while gaining critical thinking skills about personal finance.
