Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
ARE YOU WILLING TO TAKE PART IN THE CHECKBOOK CHALLENGE?
Columbia Explorers Academy is located in Chicago, an area known as Brighton Park. A majority of students (98%) are from low income families and receive free/ reduced lunch. Many of the students are enrolled in the bilingual program, Spanish and English.
To connect math with the real world and the responsibilities in the classroom, I developed a lesson that will last the whole school year called THE CHECKBOOK CHALLENGE. The checkbook challenge will reinforce the use of decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication and fraction use while connecting the activity to banking.
At the beginning of the year the students are introduced to the checkbook, how to write out checks, how to balance and add deposits to the checkbook. In order for the students to get "money" deposited into the checkbook, the students must complete homework assignments, maintain good classroom behavior, and participate in the classroom activities. The students have to write the teacher a check if they are missing 2-3 homework assignments, when they are tardy to class (other than excused), if they come to class unprepared, to purchase a pencil or pens, and if they had broken a class rule.
At the end of the month, students are allowed to go to our classroom store and purchase items with the amount of money in their checkbooks. Students may also save their money and purchase items later. I am asking for books, games, posters, candy, and balls that the students will be allowed to "purchase" in the school store.
I am hoping that this project helps the student to become responsible with money, reinforces mathematical knowledge, and connects math to everyday life. Thank You!
