Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low income, dual-language school. My students are a diverse group of English language learners and fluent bilinguals. This group of boys and girls is learning resiliency at an early age due to many difficult family situations. A majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are lucky to have breakfast in the classroom each morning.
Our school has a high turnover rate for teachers, but the ones who stay strive to be innovative and responsive to our students' needs, both emotional and academic.
Our teachers and staff aspire to provide a warm, safe and challenging academic environment for each of its students. Teachers and students are held to high standards and need the right resources in order to meet them.
My Project
Reading opens the mind to new worlds and new ideas. Diverse books like the ones I have included in this project expose students to characters with many different backgrounds and ways of life.
For my students, seeing themselves in diverse characters will help them imagine a world beyond their daily life.
Many of my students come from turbulent home settings. Through every read aloud, shared reading and independent reading time I hope to give my students inspiration and hope for a better future regardless of their current home environment. I hope to teach them empathy as well as resiliency through these stories.
