My students need dry erase boards and markers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Think about how much paper is wasted in one day by 30 students. Dry erase boards and markers cut down on the waste and allow for quick check of understanding new ideas. That quick response allows for instant help for students struggling as well as instant confirmation of responses.
My second grade class is located in the heartland of Illinois.
The school is home for a population that receives 79% free and reduced lunches. Many of my students are from homes where there is one parent, grandparent, aunt or foster parent raising them. A few are lucky to have professional parents who are vested in their child's education.
"Just a minute and I will check your work" or "Today, class, I will check table one and two's work. The rest of you will have to wait until tomorrow." These are words that are heard in classrooms a lot these days as the classroom population grows due to budget cuts. Putting dry erase boards and markers in the students' hands allows for students to write their responses down and quickly show their work to the teacher for instant approval. In a quick glance students receive confirmation for their work, and the teacher can quickly see who still needs help and can gather the few together for further instruction. Each student has a voice that is responded to immediately. Math, science, spelling and simple sentences are practiced and practiced and mastered in a fun and easy way.
Supplying my students with dry erase boards and markers will make teaching fun and exciting for my students.
Each student will have the opportunity to show their understanding of a new concept by writing their answers down and quickly showing the teacher, which allows for instant feedback and acknowledgment of their understanding. Further, it allows the teacher to see who still needs help and quickly correct misunderstandings.
