I am a regular education, 5th grade public school teacher. I have large classes, and children that are eager to learn. They are also easily distracted. I constantly look for ways to keep their attention and maximize the learning day.
This project is all about finding a fun way to get kids to think and to plan ahead. They must use their minds to concentrate by remembering several different things at one time. It also teaches flexibility and the necessity of revising a plan. It will ask students to mentally predict what the opponent will do and to anticipate several moves in advance. It even allows for a trap to be set. This provides an opportunity for children to learn how to win and lose graciously. Best of all, it’s a game that can be enjoyed for the rest of your life. Chess can be played in almost any setting, and it’s a game with universal codes. Students of all nationalities can learn to play and it’s a great equalizer in more ways than one. Both genders can be taught to play. Chess requires an individual to think and develop plans and strategies. At the same time, it’s a game that also requires working with a partner.
In short, the game of chess allows us to use the tools we often need in so many other academic areas. Skills that lead to successful life management. Chess can do all of this and at the same time, it’s easily taught through a game.
I LOVE Chess! I have taught it before, and found that students also love it. If I could get 20 sets of chess, then I could teach the strategies to an entire class at one time, and also match the kids up to a partner, and let the games begin! (Our classes are big, and at recess, kids from other classes will want to join us.)
Chess helps children learn math skills. It helps them think ahead, and it also requires following some rules. Students love working with others, and also having a little friendly competition. On those long rainy days where recess is not possible, a game of chess can be just the ticket! It’s a life skill, and it’s also bilingual. Students of all nationalities and either gender can play.
By making the game of chess available to all of my students, you are helping to develop some of the most important areas of a youths education. Please make your move to support this project.
