Help me give my students crossbody bags and wallets to protect their valuables both at school and in the community. These items will support their independence while allowing them to be as trendy as their typically developing peers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is dedicated to and leading the charge to meet the needs of a population of adults with disabilities who range from ages 18 to 21. The students who attend our school have completed a traditional high school and are seeking transition services. We provide a robust curriculum to support their vocational, academic, and social-emotional needs. Students are empowered and enthusiastic about learning, and that is reflected throughout the school.
Once students have completed the classes on campus, they have the ability to then enroll in the work program, which ultimately increases their chances of placement within the community to work for a partnered business.
Our goal for each student is to gain the skills necessary to become as independent as possible within their communities upon graduation.
My Project
During my time at my school, I have sought out resources to meet the needs of all students. My retail classroom provides valuable services to all students. The students in my classroom are provided with retail work experience. The students of the school are taught in a controlled environment to shop independently and purposefully. They spend the SOA bucks which they earn in classes throughout the week. Students are paid in school money based on their ability to adhere to school expectations which are being on time, respecting themselves, others and the environment.
Last year the DonorsChoose community funded a similar project for our students, we achieved the desired outcomes of supporting student independence and we would like to replicate that outcome for our new students.
Our young adults are in need of cross-body bags and wallets to keep their valuables safe and discrete. The requested assortment of inexpensive stylish purses and wallets would not only give them a safe place to store their personal effects and money but these will keep them trendy as well. I purposely requested cross-body bags so that students will not have to worry about losing their bags containing their valuables or being an easy target for theft in the public. We are teaching our young adults with disabilities to be independent and these items will get them closer to that ultimate goal. Thank you all in advance for your support and for helping our students accomplish their goals.
