Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First graders love to talk, but learning often necessitates a quiet environment. This year I want to make our classroom as comfortable and inviting as possible. A yacker tracker would help my chattering students know when to be quiet, and a set of bean bag chairs would provide them with a cozy place to read during the day.
A yacker tracker would be useful because first graders have a difficult time determining the noise level that is appropriate at different times of the day. A yacker tracker is shaped like stoplight, and it allows the teacher to choose the maximum noise level welcome in the classroom at any given time. The device shows green when the children are within the appropriate range, flashes a yellow warning when they begin to leave it, and the moves to red when they have become too loud. All too often, my students gradually raise their voices to a level that makes it difficult to concentrate. The yacker tracker would help all of them in all subject areas by preventing this from happening. Additionally, the device would instill a sense of personal responsibility for learning in my children by giving them the power to regulate their own sound environment.
A set of beanbag chairs would also improve our classroom environment. Reading is a necessary life skill, and it is also something I want my class to enjoy. They get tired of sitting at their desks and poring over books, but they also find our linoleum floors to be too cold to strech out upon. Beanbags would provide a comfortable alternative to both. The opportunity to use them a positive incentive for all of my students to concentrate on this valuable skill.
With the yacker tracker and the beanbag chairs, all 20-25 of my Bronx students would have a room where everyone has the best conditions for learning.
