Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science is all about doing: doing labs, doing experiments, doing it yourself. Unfortunately doing an air pollution lab is dangerous without the right tools.
My students are inner-city minority kids planning on going to college.
Many will be the first in their families to finish high school. Most will be the first in their families to attend college. Our school is helping them with that goal by providing them academically challenging courses such as AP Environmental Science. Our school is small, and we are able to keep class sizes capped at 25. As a result, our students are able to make huge gains in closing the achievement gap.
My Project
For most of my students, the AP Environmental Science course is their first exposure to environmental issues. They get particularly confused about the difference between green house gases, like carbon dioxide, and air pollutants, like ash and sulfur compounds. A lab that allows them to measure common air pollutants would really help them experience the difference. Although students could read about the difference, measuring the difference themselves is so much more meaningful.
Not only would the kit enrich their understanding, but it would also give them practical skills in doing science. They would experience what it is like to be a scientist, and how scientists collect data. If they can do it themselves, my students can believe in their own capabilities.
These materials will enrich the lives of my students by giving them practical experience with science.
It will also help them understand two of the major topics of environmental science: air pollution and climate change. For students going to college despite the challenges, it is a huge inspiration.
