My classroom is full of students who are emergent bilingual learners. All of my students are learning English. My emergent bilingual learners are either recent arrivals or brand new to the country. My students bring a wide variety of cultures, languages, and experiences to the classroom in order to create a diverse learning environment.
In addition to learning English, my students are expected to expand their knowledge in order to reach the 2nd grade Common Core curriculum state standards.
My school is a small inclusive public school that is part of a large urban district where over 75% received free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
My class needs anchor chart paper. We use chart paper daily in the classroom. We use it in morning meeting to write the morning message or play educational games like catch the bug. We use it in reading for our weekly question and have students record their answers on the paper and then showcase them in the hallway for the school to see. We use them in reading during gallery walks where students have a question or an to respond to and write their response on the paper. We use them in math to do word problems as a whole class together and then use as a model.
Chart papers allow the students to create their own models as a resource in the classroom!
The students can look around the room and use their own work as a model to help them answer questions, spell words, and solve problems! Chart paper helps support all of my students and especially my emergent bilingual students. It also helps my students take control of their own learning!
