This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Head Start through 5th-grade elementary school. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument, much less to learn how to write or compose music. I was able to have several music projects funded throughout the years that allowed me to extend my program in terms of strings, percussion, and recorders. Although most of my students are of Haitian-American heritage, we pride ourselves in being diverse as our teaching staff stem from many countries and ethnic backgrounds.
Even though I serve a community that is high-poverty, my students have found comfort and stability through music and the performing arts.
They also bring joy wherever and whenever they perform in the community and for the school population.
Since 2007, I have managed my music program using materials from DonorsChoose.org projects and purchasing out of pocket, but now help is once again needed to extend our music program.
My Project
Our music classroom has electronic keyboards, guitars, and drums and tuners. We have 40 mini keyboards (2 octaves) which use 6 AA batteries each that have been sitting in the storage room for over 7 years. Having batteries for these miniature keyboards enables students to switch between our instruments both in class and between classes. Batteries provide more flexibility and available space for students rather than if the keyboards are plugged directly into a power strip. It allows students to work more easily in groups as well.
Rechargeable batteries will help save the environment – it removes the need to throw away hundreds of batteries each year.
Getting these types of batteries with chargers is cost-effective since it will save the school from purchasing an excess number of batteries each year.
Having rechargeable batteries would greatly impact the efficiency of our music program. Please support our cause.
