Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the most diverse city of the world: Houston, Texas. These students bring their individual experiences to the classroom, which helps influence discussions and debates about the world around them. My students are future engineers, creators, doctors, politicians, activists, nurses, and leaders.
These empowered students are perfectly poised to develop innovative solutions to diverse problems.
My kiddos are also economically disadvantaged with over 85% qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Therefore, a lack of access to certain resources means that their ability to create does not always come to fruition. Lacking an outlet stifles their creativity and voice. But trust me when I say, the world needs their creativity and voice.
My Project
What good is physics if it is limited to paper exams and word problems? I believe that the beauty of physics is in its ability to describe the world around us in simple, measurable ways. Although our school provides LabQuests to make these measurements, on lab days we end up raiding the computer lab for power strips to charge the LabQuests. Cords are slung about the room as we attempt to charge enough of the devices for each table to engage in an activity. All of this, only to have the labs cut short to clean up and plug in all the LabQuests again.
Docking stations provide students with immediate access to a LabQuest, which promotes the practice of making accurate measurements in class.
This way, students will be able to walk into the class, grab their LabQuest, and begin the real-world exploration of classical mechanics, electricity, and magnetism.
