Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is considered a Title I campus. All students are currently receiving free breakfast. Many of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our district is implementing a balanced literacy approach for reading and writing instruction. Students need the necessary supplies to be successful learners. Our day consists of interactive read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, technology, and literacy centers during our reading block. During our writing block, students participate in a writing warm up, mini lesson, and independent writing.
Our student population consists of students participating in the Bilingual and ESL Program.
Many of our students and community were affected by Hurricane Harvey. It has been a difficult school year for many of our students. Some were displaced from their homes and schools. Although it has been a challenge for many of my students, they still manage to come to school every day. They are eager and willing to be successful and independent learners.
My Project
The charging station will be used to keep their Chromebooks fully charged throughout the school day. Students need to be able to use their Chromebooks to create digital stories and to complete weekly technology projects on google classroom. Many of my students are English Language Learners and are participating in an ESL class or a Bilingual Class. The use of digital stories will increase their language acquisition. Their affective filter is lowered because students submit projects digitally. The pressure of speaking and presenting orally decreases when students present to their class in a group.
An innovative way for students to learn new concepts and skills is through the use of technology.
My students are motivated and eager to learn when I integrate technology into the balanced literacy approach. Digital stories allow students the opportunity to be creative in many ways. Students can work collaboratively in groups of five. Students can build on each other's digital stories. Students can also create digital portfolios that include digital stories and any other type of digital project. These portfolios can be used to show student growth and to present to parents throughout the school year.
