Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has been struggling to keep teachers. Changing to new standards and economic pressures have had an impact on this community, and, by extension, on my students. My students are curious, rambunctious, and earnest.
They are mostly low income students in a predominately rural Hispanic community.
All students receive free lunches at our school. Many student have family members who used to be incarcerated at the now closed private prison. We have many at-risk students, and many students' reading level is well below 7th grade level. Some are as far as five grade levels behind.
My Project
Students will read Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction by David Macaulay, outline the major steps in constructing it, and make a list of words for word study. They will read The Midwife's Apprentice, focusing on the character development in the story. They will read a Single Shard to examine how Tree-ear gets courage for his dangerous mission.
We will have a Socratic Seminar to compare and contrast characters and plots from the various novels read and discuss how authors accurately portray history.
Then students will write their own well-developed character story set during the Middle Ages. This will give them an opportunity to use their imaginations to construct a story and to read, critique, and edit each other's papers.
