Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of individuals who come from the south side of Chicago. They are intelligent and creative teenagers who need a incredible amount of guidance to help them through these transitional years. They are exposed to poverty and violence and need inspirational and exciting learning opportunities to help them become critical thinkers and strive for a happy and productive life.
These kids are ready and willing to learn but we have limited resources in our small public school.
At the start of this school year I asked what books they have read and much to my dismay not one student could recall a novel. Let's change that!
My Project
The books I have requested for my students will offer them the opportunity to explore novels that are relavent to their lives. The Bluford Series are young adult novels set in the fictional inner-city high school of Bluford High in Southern California as part of an effort to promote reading in underfunded school districts. These novels will allow my students to access a gateway to better understanding their own communities and inspire them to look at their community with a sense of belonging and responsibility. Please help me hook my students on the power of reading and thinking critically about important issues.
