This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are motivating 21st-century learners through exciting and engaging environments! I am the Library Media Specialist at a Title I school in Virginia Beach, VA where approximately 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They live in an area of the city with one of the highest poverty rates.
Our student population has become increasingly diverse in recent years.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences. The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways to keep students engaged and build skills that will prepare them for potential careers.
My Project
Our school population has become increasingly diverse in recent years. I want our library collection to accurately represent our young readers through diverse characters and storylines. Our students should feel the library is an open and welcoming place where everyone fits in and belongs.
I hope to build an equitable collection that inspires all of our students not only to love books and reading but also encourages them to celebrate diversity and practice empathy.
This project is full of diverse book titles that celebrate our differences and respect all cultures. I have also included books about military families. They grow up in families where sacrifice, deployments, and frequent change are normal and expected. I want my students to have books in the library that reflect their experiences.
