My Students
Our school is a high need, low performing school in the city of St. Petersburg. My school has 100% free or reduced lunch and we have an array of programs to help our families. Even though financial support is difficult, I always have parents who try to give as much as they can. Our students and school have its challenges but my students never give up on their big dreams. We are constantly working together to build a positive culture.
My Project
These books will become a staple in my library. The few books I have purchased on my own are already being passed around to my other students. These books encourage children to become fluent readers if they are not at the specific level of these books. This becomes a goal for them throughout the year. The books I am looking to add are Barber Game Time Books (sports-themed), Clubhouse Mysteries, Julian and Gloria books which we pull out chapters throughout the year for our curriculum already. Books have been seen as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. They can be used to immerse yourself in and learn about other cultures and other people. My library is full of culturally rich texts except it leaves out the culture of my students. I teach beautiful and kind children and I would love to share the joy of reading books with characters that look like them!
