My Students
My students are voracious readers and diverse learners! They are diverse in their reading preferences, their learning styles, and their cultural backgrounds. They love exploring new series, new authors, and new topics, and are especially excited when provided with regular opportunities to share what they are reading and get suggestions from me via weekly book talks.
We need diverse books because seeing a reflection of who you are allows you to understand who you can be.
I want the books in the classroom library to be a source of enjoyment, exposure to new ideas, and inspiration to my students. They deserve it!
My Project
Our classroom library is filled with a variety of titles of interest to my students, but it lacks books with characters who look like and come from the same places as my students. The books I am requesting were selected using resources recommended by We Need Diverse Books, an organization that advocates essential changes in the publishing industry to produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people.
I want my students to see themselves in the books they read.
I want my students to find diverse characters to whom they can relate. As future leaders and global citizens, I want my students to be inspired and empowered by the characters they are exposed to every day.
