This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in the heart of Southwest Detroit in Michigan. Our school is a K-2nd grade building. We have 150 2nd graders in our building and are a Title I school. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive free lunch. Most of our students come from low socioeconomic disadvantaged homes and are first-generation citizens with parents that have limited English language skills.
My students are excited to learn and come to school with a growth mindset.
They are caring, compassionate, and excited to learn. They often come to school with a lot on their minds, but with a positive attitude and open heart. They work hard not only to be good students, but to promote kindness and be good citizens of the world.
Despite the fact that many are performing below grade level, we see a huge amount of growth throughout the school year. We believe that each student has the capability to reach their goals!
My Project
My students love looking at and reading books! Our classroom library has many great books, but we need more books that will show my students that race representation matters. This selection of books will give them a wider range of books that are written by authors and illustrators that are of diverse backgrounds, and characters that look like them- or maybe not!
These books will help to educate my students about a more diverse selection of authors and will be great read-along books to aid in teaching my students about racial justice and representation.
