Character is the Sum and Total of a Person’s Choices

My students need 5 sets of books and lesson plans to create a character education library.

As P. Fitzwater stated: "Character is the sum and total of a person’s choices" - and wise choices cannot be made in a vacuum. As an elementary school counselor for grades K-8 in a high needs community, I want to help implement character education at my school, but I need the materials to do so. Our students come to us with such great potential but staggering needs as many are homeless and this project will help to bridge gaps that may allow these students to rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Our motivation behind introducing character education to our students is to help improve the overall quality of the school. The specific objectives we want to address are decreasing behavior problems that seem to occur on a daily basis, increasing attendance, and decreasing bullying in the school. In particular we have been having problems with a group of girls ganging up on one individual girl in the classroom and ostracizing her from the group.

I hope that by implementing monthly lessons and visiting each classroom monthly to discuss character education, we will help the students make ethical decisions in and out of the classroom so that they can become productive adults. The program materials will be housed in the Character Education Library that I hope to create, which will be used not only for this initiative but also into the future by the entire school. The objective of character education which will be achieved through the use of the character education books and activities will help to change the climate of the school, reduce behavior problems, decrease absences and decrease bullying in the school.

I chose to become a school counselor to have a positive impact on the lives of children. By implementing character education I can have more of an impact since character education is about people caring about people. When teachers have more time to teach in a civil, respectful environment, and children feel safe, appreciated and respected, then real achievement and learning can take place. It’s called a quality learning environment, and the research shows that how a student feels about their learning environment and their opportunity for success are crucial factors in student achievement. All children need mentors, role models and caring adults in their lives. They crave nurturing, caring, positive relationships which is the essence of character education.
