Help me give my students books to read that can build character, identify feelings, and explain differences.
In ordering small sets of these character education books, we can read and discuss in groups.
Our small community has approximately 450 students. Our school incorporates the RTI and PBIS model which promotes social and emotional wellness. The Positive Behavior Incentive and Supports model has been a huge success in our school. Our committee meets once a month to review positive behaviors and misbehaviors. In the past three years, the data has proven that there are significantly fewer minor and major negative behaviors due to the increase in positive behaviors being taught, expected and rewarded.
Many students come to school lacking the social and emotional skills to function within a school community.
Our school has taken the initiative to deliberately teach these life skills. These skills and expectations are taught and expected. Students are then rewarded for their good behavior. Students internalize the positive feelings from doing the right thing and continue to do the right thing!
My Project
Students enter today's classrooms with a variety of social and emotional needs which must be addressed before the child is ready to learn. Schools can not control the child's home environments, but we must teach the children coping skills. Having small sets of these easy to read books, allows us to be in a group and discuss our differences and feelings together.
Small book sets which emphasize character education, will enable my students to be more compassionate and understanding of each other.
Having resources available in the classroom which stimulate conversations and understanding of each other will help to maintain a classroom built on respect, compassion and acceptance.
