My students are remarkable people. A majority of my students qualify for free lunches as they come from lower income families with several being considered homeless. Often, they are single parent homes. I have many transient students as we have the North Central Correctional Complex in our town. I am also beginning to see some of the children of the drug epidemic who have cognitive and physical delays.
Many of them deal with difficult issues that no child should have to deal with, yet they come to me eager to learn.
We have been trying several different Positive Behavior Intervention Programs in our classroom and school. But like most other areas of education, not all of my students come with the same set of schema or background knowledge to handle what is required in the structured world of school. Some have difficulty navigating when faced with external demands of independent work. They become negative as they struggle.
My students are loving and caring individuals who just need some help making mindset changes with how they see themselves and their worlds.
The books in this project are about gaining insight and building confidence as well as becoming the best person they can be. It's never too young to start the mindset changes.
