Our classroom is a true community. Students work together to solve problems, support each other, and learn together.
My students are creative thinkers, gifted learners, and high achievers.
They come from many neighborhoods and have varying levels of resources available to them at home. These students are the next scientists, doctors, politicians, teachers, and leaders. They are incredibly curious and love learning by doing. My students go home every night and share their excitement about the new topics they are learning with their families.
My students are unique in that they travel as a cohort from grade to grade. Because of this, students spend a lot of time working with each other and getting to know each other. As with any relationship, sometimes disagreements arise.
These materials will help address empathy, growth mindset, bullying, kindness, and diversity.
I will read them proactively during morning meeting to encourage positive peer-to-peer relationships. I can also re-read them if we are facing a challenging moment in our classroom. The books feature diverse characters and experiences to provide students with mirrors of their own lives and windows into the lives of others. I plan to use the kindness and empathy books during our yearly kindness week.
