Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a diverse class that comes from different backgrounds and most are bilingual. Yet they are all curious, driven, and enthusiastic. Most of them come from low-income backgrounds and homes that cannot afford to give them the attention they deserve. But despite their disadvantages, they are working hard to achieve their reading goals. I want to make sure they have access to the right resources.
My goal is to create a welcoming and stable environment that allows them to meet their full potential.
Our Elementary shool, is a National Blue Ribbon School, runs an exceptional reading program that focuses on literacy excellence, and it would be helpful for all of my students to have access to books that portray stories and characters that they can relate to.
My Project
I am requesting different sets of fiction and non-fiction chapter books to help my students start a book club that include the Fly Guy series and World Adventure Travel Chapter Books. Multiple copies of the same books are difficult to find in both school and public libraries. But with your help, I will be able to provide an easy-access classroom library where students can gather and have meaningful discussions about their favorite books and authors.
Reading is my students' vehicle to travel through time and around the world.
Speakers and authors visiting our campus have shared anecdotes about the activities they were involved in when they were my students' age, eg. softball, horseback riding, traveling to distant lands, etc. And each time, my students react with a puzzled look because they have a hard time relating to them. A book club will open doors and help my students develop meaningful friendships, personal autonomy, and knowledge about the world.
