This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach as an interventionist and dyslexia specialist in a Title I school in Dallas, Texas. In both of my roles, I support struggling readers ranging from kindergarten through third grade while I pull them out of class and work in small groups.
The students I work with are capable of amazing things, and your donation will help them learn to read and feel successful!
All students I work with within small groups could use a little boost with their confidence, and having the just-right materials to allow them to grow and succeed makes a world of a difference! Every day they come to school ready to learn and try new things, and it is my job to do whatever I can to ensure I teach exactly what they need to learn.
My Project
During my intervention groups, I work with small groups of students that need extra support. During my dyslexia groups, I teach students identified with dyslexia. With all the students I work with, I teach phonics skills in a systematic manner- the skills I teach are ordered in a purposeful way that will allow the students to build their skills over time. Decodable books are used alongside my phonics lessons.
These decodable books are needed to provide students with the opportunity to read successfully while practicing the phonics skills I teach them during groups!
Students want to read chapter books like their peers- and they can!- we just need to get the right books in their hands.
It is not enough to simply put a book in front of a student- I have to be careful in choosing the right book that my students can be successful with. With your help, I can provide my students with decodable books at their "just-right" level that will help boost their confidence as they become stronger readers!
