My students need 7 copies each of 15 high interest chapter books at their reading levels to help them improve their English and prepare for third grade.
Help my students enlarge their world for as Jacqueline Kennedy once said, "There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." My students have a love for books that is inspiring, but they need access to high interest books at their reading levels.
I teach group of bilingual second graders in the Chicago suburbs.
Our school is diverse and nearly all of my students are children of poverty. My students are Latino and their families are from Mexico or Central America.
Learning another language is tough, but my students are motivated! They are an inspiration - working hard to learn Spanish and English. In second grade we continue to build reading skills in Spanish and English. However, in third grade they will transition to all English and we are working hard to help make that a successful transition!
My students are passionate readers. They crave the written word and desperately want to improve their English reading and writing.
My Project
In order to help my students grow as English readers we need more high interest books that inspire them to read! The books we are requesting are high interest chapter books. These chapter books will motivate my students because in second grade reading a chapter book is about as cool as it gets! The books we selected are appropriate for different reading levels. In order for my students to grow as readers they need to read "good fit" books, not too easy and not too hard.
My students read at different levels and these books will help meet the needs of all of my students! I selected seven copies of each book so that we can grow as readers together. These sets of books will transform our literacy block. I will be able to motivate my students in guided reading groups while together we practice reading strategies and improve English vocabulary and fluency. These books are also part of series and will motivate my students to seek out other books in the series and keep reading!
My students face many obstacles.
They are language learners and children of poverty. The statistics are grim - few of our Hispanic students are able to graduate from high school and continue on to college. Yet, when you walk into my classroom you see a group of students with a spark for learning, a desire to grow, and a passion for reading. They are blind to the obstacles before them. Help by giving them the tools they need to be able to overcome these obstacles and prove the statistics wrong.
