Most of my students come from a lower income family, more than 60% of my students are free and reduced, and some have experienced trauma within their own families. A good portion of my students is a bit lower than the average incoming student at their age. However, my students have a strong will and drive. They work hard and are very open on what they need help with or what they love doing!
I am very inspired by their desire to read, challenge themselves, and just get lost in books.
So many of them are just itching to get to reading every day and learn more through books, videos, and experiences. They try their best with the books in our classroom, but a bigger variety would offer them even more chances to learn and practice the skills we discuss. My students love movement, constant stimulation, and new things to catch their attention. They are so fun to have in class and definitely make each day exciting!
My Project
As the school year goes on an amazing thing occurs within the classroom; second-grade readers are beginning to evolve into third-grade readers! It is very evident in the speed that the students are reading, the books that they are reading, and how much they can read. With this, the students are always in need of bigger books that provide entertainment and just enough challenge for them. As they grow in their reading abilities, their variety/level of their books also need to grow.
Chapter book series are needed for these students to continue their reading growth and love for reading.
I love that these students can become friends with the characters in the series they are reading. They can connect with their characters on so many levels and learn lessons for REAL LIFE, all while strengthening their readings skills and growing confidence in their reading without even noticing it. Students can go on adventures to places they may never get to go with Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House series. Or they will be able to learn about friendship in Ivy and Bean and The Owl Diaries. These books will provide so much for them!
