This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my class are from a variety of diverse backgrounds. They come from different cultures, lifestyles, family structures, and religions. My students come to school ready to learn. They enjoy hands on activities to help them better understand what is being taught and why. As their teacher, I try my best to make every lesson as hands-on and interactive as possible to keep them engaged and wanting to learn.
Every student in our school receives free lunch, breakfast, and dinner.
Our school is located across the street from income-based housing. The majority of students walk home or are bused nearby.
My school is an older building that is Title I. Even though we are Title I and fully accredited this year, public school funding continues to dwindle year after year. I want to provide the students with as many educational experiences as possible in order to set them up for future success!
My Project
My students get bored reading passages in guided reading. They beg for books!
These novels will build their reading stamina and also help produce valuable "book talk."
Many of my students are struggling readers and are just beginning to read chapter books. Having a group set of chapter books will allow me to do novel studies in a small group setting ensuring the students are comprehending what they are reading. Having a variety of books will allow me to choose the books that will engage the students' interest and keep their attention. I can imagine the celebration we will have once we've finished the first novel!
