I am the only second grade teacher in the school and currently have the largest class of the school. My second grade students come from a variety of backgrounds and situations but have one thing in common; they come in to our classroom as "Learners". With the help of my students, I have built a feeling of family among the group in hopes to teach empathy, understanding and forgiveness.
I teach a wonderful but active second grade class at a Title 1 school in the Western Foothills of Maine.
AGS is home to students from Pre-K through Sixth Grade. Majority of our students come from low-income households with over 75% of students receiving free hot lunch.
Our school now has an outdoor classroom, an orchard and garden, as well as food pantry to help fill our students bodies and their brains. Amazing things are happening at AGS!
My Project
Every year the students that walk into my classroom are of varying reading abilities; ranging from kindergarten levels up to third grade level readers. The books I have chosen will be used during our Book Club time for reading. Students of all reading levels dive into series and learn by discussing the books and learning from each other.
All of my second graders want and deserve to read chapter book series regardless of their reading level.
Students reading at a lower level have fewer options for accessible chapter books and I want to change that! I want to fill my classroom with chapter books of all levels to better meet ALL of my students needs.
