My Students
I teach Reading/ELA and Social Studies to students of many backgrounds and reading abilities. I am teaching 5th grade for the first time and I am quite lucky because I will be teaching many of the same students that I taught when they were in 2nd and 3rd grade. Our campus hosts our district’s deaf education program, so I also teach students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Some of my students struggle with reading, while others are reading beyond grade level.
My Project
Because I have never taught anything higher than 3rd grade but am now going to teach 5th graders, my classroom library is not quite big kid ready! I gave away many of my picture books and easy readers to primary teachers, because they were way below the reading level and interest of my current students. Plus, I taught many of these same kids as 2nd and 3rd graders, so they had read them already. Next years group will also have had me as their 3rd grade teacher so it was best that my old books find a new home and I begin to build a new library of challenging chapter books for my students.
