I am a teacher at Melody Elementary School. Melody is located on the west side of Chicago near Garfield Park. I teach a self-contained Special Education class consisting of students with learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and emotional disabilities. Our school's student population is 99 percent African American, and 96 percent of our students live in poverty. Because we are so close to downtown, our students have had opportunities to take field trips to city attractions. However, because they live in the city, these students rarely get the opportunity to visit the Illinois countryside. Many of my students have never left the city. This is why I would like to take my students and two other classes of students on a field trip to Channahon State Park. I feel as though this field trip would be a very valuable experience for my students. So many of them have never left the city, and I want them to be able to see how beautiful all the areas of Illinois are, not just the city of Chicago. This would be a wonderful hands on learning opportunity for my students, and I am very excited at the possibility of them getting to enjoy this experience. My students will have the opportunity to learn about different trees, plants and animals that live in Illinois. They will also be able to compare similarities and differences between the city and the country side. I think that my students would love getting to hike through the forest or to stick their feet into a river. These children never get the opportunity to do these simple activities that so many people take for granted. I would love to give my students this experience.
