My 25 fifth graders are kind, sweet kids who are eager to learn ... especially with technology!
Most of my students come from low-income families. The free and reduced lunch rate at my school is over 70%. As a consequence, the experiences of my students outside of their home and community are few. Their resources are few, including their access to technology and the Internet. For many students, that access begins at school.
My Project
In my classroom, we do lots of reading, writing, and research! One of our objectives for 5th grade is for students to write a feature article on a topic of their choice. Students get so excited because they can learn and produce something on a topic they are interested in, and many times it is a current event issue that affects them directly. Students are expected to be able to research a topic and write a feature article modeled after real magazine articles that they read.
My students need these iPads to accomplish this task. We have 4 aging desktop computers in my classroom, and they are dinosaurs! They take 10 to 20 minutes to boot up, if we can get them to boot up at all!
With iPads, students will be able to access the information they need quickly using the Internet or our district's online research data banks (we no longer have encyclopedia volumes). They will also be able to create media rich projects on the iPad to showcase their learning and let their voices be heard
These iPads will make a difference in the learning of my students because they are motivating and exciting!
Students would much rather learn and create things using new, easy to use technology than the old dinosaur computers we have now.
My students need this to access all that the information world offers to make them better students, better writers, and so their words and ideas can truly change the world.
