This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said. I want my students to read this quote and apply it to their lives every single day.

Here is some information about our school population: 90% of our students are first-generation college bound, 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and 95% of our students are Hispanic or African American.

Most students enter our school at least one grade level behind in math and reading.

My Project

I'd like to start off the next school year with a novel that gets my students thinking about the injustices that have existed in the past, as well as the injustices that exist in the present day. I believe that a novel such as the one I am requesting will get my students to a place in which they feel that something needs to be done to change the status quo, and this change can start with them.

One of my students told me that she thought Jewish people did not exist anymore.

Sadly, this is because my kids are not aware of what is outside their communities in Texas, since they have not had the chance to experience other places. With the novel that I am requesting, my students' eyes will be opened to the world outside of Texas. It will also illustrate the other groups of people that have dealt with discrimination. I believe it is a novel such as this one that will empower my students.
