Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My Middle School students are simply amazing! I work with about 90 students who are all unique learners. It is my strong belief that forming and leveraging family relationships is pivotal to my students’ long-term success.

My students PERSERVERE despite the daily challenges that they face by living in a low-income community.

My students come to our class excited to see what we are going to learn that day. It is critical that they get into the best High School that will meet their needs. For my students, the High School that they attend could mean whether or not they will drop out of school.

For some of my students, the only meals they eat are the ones they eat at school. I know that my students are capable of anything they set their minds to. They look forward to being able to share their growth this year with you!

My Project

A classroom must be a place where ALL students are encouraged to explore their identity, challenge their thinking, and ultimately allows you to become who you are. To do this, we need a classroom library that is able to meet the needs of ALL students in our class.

In today's society, students need to be exposed, challenged, and allowed to grapple with our society's most challenging questions of equity, class, racism, oppression, and social justice.

My project would allow my students to be exposed to a plethora of fiction and nonfiction books written from a social justice lens. These books are often written from people who have experience racism, classism, and oppression similar to what my student's grapple with daily.

By hearing and reading similar voices, my student's will be able to learn more about their own identities. By being exposed to other voices (ones often overlooked in traditional curriculums), my students will be more prepared to enter the world as empathetic listeners who are ready to change the world!
