Can you imagine what it feels like to be a student that struggles with reading and spelling every day? The Barton Reading and Spelling system will aide my students in increasing their ability to read, giving them back the confidence they deserve.
The students that will be receiving extra intensive support are in 6th through 12th grade.
These students are struggling and have struggled for years in the areas of reading and spelling. They are frustrated and often have fallen through the cracks. Many of them feel like they will never be good at reading and feel that they are not smart because they can't read well. Often, these students attend our charter school because they haven't been able to do well in a traditional public school, lacking credits and the grades in reading to be successful.
My Project
I have been a reading specialist for over 7 years in an elementary school. However, now I need materials that are grade level appropriate for 6th through 12th grade students. It has been important for me to find materials that will help students learn to read, without offending them with elementary materials. The Barton System was designed for students of any age who have struggled in reading, or are suspected of having, dyslexia. The Barton System has been used successfully with children as young as 5 who are in kindergarten. Yet nothing in the Barton System will offend a teenager or an adult. I will be able to use these materials to teach small groups using a direct, intensive, systematic approach. The levels of the program follow researched-based way of teaching reading. The levels I will need are as follows:
1 Phonemic Awareness
2 Consonants & Short Vowels
3 Closed Syllables and Units
My project is extremely important because research shows that 95% of reading failure is preventable, by using appropriate reading systems and well-trained teachers.
It is my goal to help my students learn to read proficiently in order to gain back their confidence before they leave high school, enabling them the opportunity to feel capable of attending college.
