Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Literacy Coach at an under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn. Since the days of prehistoric man, people have been telling stories using pictures instead of prose. From the cave paintings of the Cro-Magnon to the hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt, graphic storytelling has been in use as a popular means of communicating thoughts and ideas. Graphic storytelling has undergone a recent resurgence, especially among adolescent readers. Publishers, writers, and artists have created colorful, action-packed books featuring superheroes and other larger-than-life characters that can give struggling or disinterested readers a bridge to more advanced literature. Even some classics have been converted into graphic novels. Among them are J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and Ray Bradbury's short stories. Graphic novels also reflect popular culture. The illustrations show the trend in young adult clothing, and design. The dialogue uses popular slang. The cinematic action is edgy and fast-paced, often with multiple story lines. Current issues, such as politics, are included in the themes. The wide appeal of the graphic novel form has not gone unnoticed. The ALA 2004 Best Book for Young Adults included two graphic novels on the shortlist, 'Persepolis' by Marjane Satrapi and 'Blankets' by Craig Thompson. Graphic novels are also included on book lists for reluctant young adult readers. And the ALA list of recommended books for reluctant young adults for 2005 includes at least three graphic novels. It's time that our classroom libraries embrace what our students are reading! I am asking for funding of a set of graphic novels to supplement my classroom library. These texts that my students crave will be an invaluable teaching tool that will drive instruction, and motivate my reluctant readers. Make a difference in the life of a reader. The power of books is a wonder.
