Changing Minds Through Media

My students need six texts including "Filmmaking for Teens" and "On Film Editing" so that they can learn techniques to edit their video creations highlighting classroom projects and school events.

Help a rural public high school's weekly student-run broadcast change the morale of an entire community for the better! As the sole instructor for 3 levels of film/video education and the Coordinator of our extra curricular Video Program serving students in grades 9-12, my goal is to revitalize what was once a great source of pride and positive energy for my students and our school.

To achieve this goal, it is important that students be equipped with the proper skills and information. Unfortunately, in my first year of teaching, I have inherited a sagging budget. After 8 months and several large personal expenditures, I have finally run out of money for the texts I need for lesson planning and our classroom library. My students are eager and willing to learn, excited about turning this program around, and cognizant of the positive impact their productions can have on the school community as a whole.

I am in need of the materials to give them that power. Currently, I am preparing to teach a detailed unit on Editing, a crucial step of the film making process. Each of the texts includes valuable instructions for proper film editing and will assist my students in the ongoing creation of school-oriented film projects throughout their tenure in my program. Additionally, these texts will contribute to our classroom library, to which students can continually refer to refresh, hone, or enrich their skills as they progress. I would like my students to recognize the permanence of the changes we are making and to see that we have invested in their success. These texts and our classroom library will be the first step.

With the lessons I will be able to develop with the listed texts, my students will create news pieces highlighting classmates' accomplishments on the soccer, volleyball, and baseball fields, advertisements for Student Council charity events, and celebrations of their school community -- in essence, learning how to edit will enable them to publicize all the wonderful things going on in and around our school! When you donate the materials requested, you will ensure that my students learn and practice the very best skills and techniques. You will enable them to become more familiar with the latest technology in the industry today. You will provide them with transferable, marketable, practical skills. Our show is often the talk of the school - please help my students guarantee that that talk is academic, encouraging, and positive.
