My Students

Remember the first time you read a really good book and got lost in the story? I want my students to have the opportunity to get lost in their stories. I want them to fall in love with literature and become better readers and writers as a result.

My students are part of our alternative education program.

Our school is made up of students who are not successful in the traditional classroom. Many of them work until late at night and then get up to come to school in the morning. They are providing for families and many of them are parents themselves. My students need flexibility and the ability to work at their own pace. However, they understand how incredibly important a diploma is and they work hard to ensure they have that opportunity for themselves.

My Project

Right now the library in our classroom consists of books from the 80's and that hold no interest for my students. When it is time to pick a book to read they find it incredibly frustrating. My students need the options to pick books that are exciting and interesting to them. They need this not only to allow them the opportunities to enhance their reading and writing abilities, but also to provide them a place to escape the pressures of their own lives. Reading is such an important part not only of education, but of life. I want my students to have choices and opportunity especially when it comes to book choices.

Reading gives us better understanding of life around us.

I believe that my students will become not only better students but better members of our community by having access to a better library of books. I believe giving them more choices will enhance the environment of our classroom and students will be more likely to continue their reading journeys far beyond just our classroom.
