My Students
I have the privilege of working with a diverse student population. Statistically speaking, our state deems 90% of my students economically disadvantaged, 20% to have a range of learning disabilities, and 6% as English language learners. In my eyes, my students are so much more than the statistics and labels society pushes on them.
My students overcome battles daily; they are warriors.
At home, my students take care of their their families and nurture their culture. To get to school, my students commute on average one hour, each way. They are dedicated and actively choose to continue their education, which will one day better their communities. My students are given obstacle after obstacle and still they persevere. They are my inspiration and our future.
My Project
I meet diverse students’ needs by differentiating instruction, assessments, assignments, and activities. I've found that using technology to differentiate appeals to many more of my students’ needs. The four Chromebooks that I have selected for this project will allow me to take my students beyond the constraints of traditional math education – for it would allow daily differentiation that is considerably more personalized to students’ levels of understanding.
Research shows that more learning occurs when students feel successful.
Daily access to the internet via these four Chromebooks would grant my students access to programs such as Study Island, Kahn Academy, Youtube, Desmos, and Google Classroom – all of which can dramatically enhance their learning and feeling of success. Study Island and Kahn Academy are adaptive math programs designed to track students, providing harder lessons when students show they are excelling or by providing more scaffolded lessons to students that are struggling. Access to Youtube exposes students to various teaching styles and techniques. It encourages students to research and select the videos/techniques that fit best with their learning styles – providing them with ownership of their learning.
Receiving funds for these Chromebooks would additionally enable students to utilize programs like Desmos which encourage students to work with math in a hands on manner. Often times Desmos and other online virtual interactions provide students with reasons as to why we are learning the concept and how the math appears in their immediate worlds. Additionally, through Google Classroom I can post notes, tools and resources for students to view or activities such as hyper-docs/webquests for students to take part in, to learn new concepts.
I genuinely believe that every student is capable of learning and excelling in math. Please help me, help my students!
