Changemaker ARTspace World Changing Silk Screen Studio
My students need silk screening supplies such as inks, frames, and squeegees to be able to expand their design-for-change ventures, creating up-cycled and new products in order to create a scholarship fund.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are unleashing creativity as a world-changing power in our ARTspace. We are pushing the boundaries of art, community, personal voice, and changemaking by finding ways around the limitations of supplies and funding. We are creating masterful works that illuminate our passions, concerns, and dreams for our future.
Our school is an incubator for youth leadership, preparing our young people for college and to creatively take on the challenges of a world defined by change.
We understand leadership to be driven by empathy and fed by creativity, and we strive to create a school culture that reflects these ideals. Upwards of 85% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch, and our school is situated in one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in one of the poorest cities in the nation.
The young people who walk through our doors bring with them stories, struggles, dreams, amazing talent and ability, and we work to cultivate the potential that lives in each young person and facilitate their growth as leaders and changemakers. We hope to awaken in our students a connectedness to culture, community, and humanity, along with a deep sense of responsibility based on empathy, and the creative capacity to design a just, sustainable, and peaceful world for all.
My Project
Several students have launched social ventures in the field of art and design. These projects include Revolutionary Freedom Fashion, an up-cycled fashion line highlighting the work of individuals who have dedicated their lives to working for justice. And we've created the Harvest Bag project, a line hand-stamped and hand-sewn canvas bags that can be used for garden harvesting but still look chic enough to use as an everyday bag. Using a model of social entrepreneurship, students are selling their goods and putting the profit back into their venture, to buy more materials and launch their social project (one of which is to create a scholarship fund for a college-bound student who is in need of financial assistance). With the silk screening inks and frames materials we are requesting, we will be able to produce more professional looking products at a quicker rate, thereby having more inventory to sell and in turn generating more revenue to put towards our ventures, fueling our dreams and supporting others as well.
The ability to silk screen will allow us to expand our line of design-for-change products that we are using to fund our social venture.
Our goal is to create product that is innovative, beautiful, sustainable, and which reflects our passion for community building and changemaking. All that we learn from engaging in this process of design, execution, and social entrepreneurship will follow us throughout our lives, and hopefully will help other youth fund their dream of attending college.
