Changed by Chairs: Building Chairs to Honor 20th C People
My students need access to professional carpentry tools (jigsaw, clamps, safety glasses) to help them create projects thats are beautiful in conception and execution.
Our school is a diverse population of students from around San Diego county with a guiding commitment to equity. We have an enrollment of 41% free or reduced price lunch and our special services population is significantly higher than the average in our area. We also support military families by having over 20% of our population with families serving in the military.
Our students work collaboratively in small teams and do work on projects that are usually integrated between disciplines, grade levels and teachers.
We believe that mixing students, teachers and subjects is a vital path toward real-world/authentic work.
Our students are asked to produce high-quality work that is complex, shows craftsmanship, and is authentic in nature. Projects stretch across the semester and often connect to authentic needs from our community.
My Project
Access to these carpentry tools will allow our students to build highly crafted chairs for their upcoming Changed by Chairs project. Why chairs? Chairs hold an iconic place in our collective consciousness: they can be both utilitarian and ostentatious, tools and decoration, comforter and torturer.
This semester we are going to use chairs and the people who design them to understand the trajectory of the 20th century.
We will study chairs as objects with utility and chairs as stories to tell. We will conduct an in-depth study of one chair and its designer. We will then use this in-depth study to design and build a chair for a 20th century person or group of people, an event, or a human creation that has been forgotten, misunderstood, or unknown to most of the rest of “us”.
Your donation will help many types of students, including those who qualify for free and reduced lunch, and students whose families serve in our military. Thank you for your time and consideration!
