"Be the change you want to see in the world." One of my very favorite quotes of all time. My kids see this quote every day but at this age, it might not mean much to them. One day though, I hope that they will remember that their teacher, when given the chance, made change happen for them.
Every day, these kids make me laugh.
I mean really, really laugh. They are so full of life, creativity, imagination, and joy. They teach me something new every day. I know I am supposed to be the one to teach them, and I hope that I do in fact do that every day, but what they are teaching me is far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Every day they open my eyes to a new perspective; not the typical black and white or jaded way we see things as adults, but instead a colorful and open view. A view only an inquisitive and thoughtful child can see. I love the moments when a child makes a connection between the life they live and the content we are learning whether it is in math, science, social studies or reading. There are many times when I see them take control of their learning and teach each other what they know as I just direct the conversations. What an amazing thing to see! This is why I became a teacher.
My Project
As today's generation grows up, their lives are intertwined with technology on a daily basis. They are brought up with learning games on laptops, iPads, and phones. This is how they see their parents sending and receiving information, and how most of them, us included, receive news from what is happening in their community and across the world. Yet, when they reach school age, we ask them to put away the technology and instead pick up paper, pencils, textbooks, and dictionaries. I believe that in order to truly reach these students, we must connect with them where they are at. That connection begins with the commonality of technology. I am asking for 2 iPads and covers for connected learning opportunities, 2 earphones with mics for students to fully immerse themselves into their learning platforms (apps), and an Apple TV for students to project their learning onto the classroom screen for others to benefit from their findings and creations.
With this technology, my students will be able to take control of their own education.
The whole world will be at their fingertips. I will be better able to differentiate their instruction which will enrich all students learning, they will be able to collaborate on a whole different level, and my students will stay engaged with the content as it will be more relevant to them and their daily lives.
