Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"A room without books is like a body without a soul".---Marcus Tullius Cicero. My students are hungry for challenging books to read. They have this wonderful habit of pulling out a book to read in between assignments, between classes, and often times they will take a book to read at lunch. They even borrow books to read from other teachers.

"Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body".--Brian Tracy.

This quote is hanging above our library. On those unfortunate days when we don't have gym my students assure me that it is okay because they can exercise their minds. They are asking for books on a high school level, books about other countries, cultures, about diversity, power of peace, informational books and their list goes on and on. My students understand the difference of reading for pleasure and reading for information. They truly enjoy reading for both.

My Project

Additional books for our classroom library will motivate my students to read more. Everyone likes new things and new books will get the attention of my students. Once a week we have a book share. The book share is conducted in a variety of ways. Students are encouraged to share their book any way they feel comfortable. Some students like to share their book by creating a pizza with each ingredient being a different part of the books. Other students like doing an oral book share, while some will create an alternate cover.

Adding books to our classroom library adds more opportunities for students to read and provides more exercise for their brains.

'There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.'

–Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
